PATHRAVADE

Pathravade or Pathrode is a delicacy made with the combination of colocascia l eaves and boiled rice. Colacascia leaves grow wildly during the monsoon season hence it is a monsoon delicacy. It is prepared in different ways in coastal town and in Maharashtra. Curried Pathrades are either eaten for breakfast with a steaming cup of coffee or as a meal. Curried pathrades can be mixed with mutton or chicken meat and prawns, the taste varies accordingly. I have prepared the delicacy without adding meat or prawns.

TO PREPARE THE PATHRAVADES:

Ingredients:

  • Colacascia leaves : 25 Nos. (washed and wiped dry)
  • Boiled Rice : 3 cups (washed and soaked in water overnight)
  • Red Chillies : 3
  • Tamarind : 1 marble size
  • Salt : 2 tspn
  • Water to grind

METHOD:
  • Grind the soaked rice, chillies, tamarind and salt adding water to a thick dough.
  • Cut the colacascia leaves fine and mix to the above dough.
  • Divide the mixture into smaller portions and place in a leaf (teak or banana) and fold in the edges as shown in the picture.
  • Cook in a Steamer (thondor) for 45 minutes or until fully cooked. Cool and cut into pieces of required size.

To prepare the Pathravade curry:

Coriander seeds : 3 tbspns

Cummin seeds : 2 tspns

Mustard : 1 tspn

Raw rice grains : 2 tbspns

Red chillies : 12

Onion : 2 medium

Garlic : 5/6 flakes

Grated coconut : 2 cups

Roast all the above ingredients on a tawa. To roast onion/garlic/coconut add little oil on the tawa.

Tamarind : marble size

Grind all the above to a fine thick paste.

Now keep a cooking utensil on fire and put 2 tbspns ghee and 1 tbspn of oil.

Cut one onion finely and add tothe ghee/oil and fry until brown.

Add the thick ground masala and fry for a while. Add salt to taste.

Add to it the masala water, make it a flowing consistency.

Bring it to boil and add the pathravade pieces and cook covered for a while.
